ACG - 2nd Advance Manual Project #3: The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

      Advance Manual : 226-K  Storytelling

One typical evening along the seashores of Cotabato, Tasyo was murmuring “why must I sail in this dark gloomy night”!  “If only I have better equipments”, he grumbled as he throw his net and paddle in the boat. “If only I have better boat”, he groan as he struggles to move his rickety craft towards the sea.  Tasyo was tired but he has no choice!  He needs to gather a good bounty, he needs to earn more to buy better equipment, he needs to feed his dozen ravenous younglings … he needs to please his vain wife.

The breeze of Mindanao Sea was chilly but Tasyo didn’t shudder a bit. Not even the darkening blue sea could shake the resolve of Tasyo. His focus was set to one resolve: he has to gather a good bounty tonight!

Lady luck must have smiled on Tasyo!  His first cast yielded colorful bass, large hammour, and huge quantity of crabs and mollusk.    His second cast yielded a net-full of herring and yellow fin tuna, it almost broke his net.   The third and fourth casts yielded even more fishes that he gathered for the entire year.  And when he looked down, he saw schools of fishes – glimmers of yellow, red, orange, and blue fishes - all rushing beneath his shaky boat.  His boat was filled with fish up to the brim, but Tasyo wants more.   Greed started to fill Tasyo’s heart.  This is just once in a lifetime.  This will change his life forever.   He thought, he can get more by filling the net with fish and just drag it towards home.

One last time, he casted his net towards the dark deep blue sea! This time, he didn’t catch any fish.  Instead, he caught a giant Manta Ray – 4 meters wide, weighting over a ton perhaps – and it was gigantic. Tasyo was so surprised he caught himself with the net and was in danger of falling off.   He struggled and tied the net to the boat mast, gaining him enough momentum to slow down the rampaging devil.  And just when Tasyo was gaining control of the situation, the giant ray whip its tail and sliced the boat in half.

Schools of fish exploded into the sea along with the fishing tools and safety buoy… and Tasyo?  The devil carried him!  The giant manta ray swam fast – away from the boat – with Tasyo stuck at the other end of the net.   For a moment, Tasyo thought he would die under the water but the devil took him again to the surface.   As the ferocious devil started to swim, Tasyo hold his breath hoping he can have enough to survive until the next air.  And yes, he did make it… but for how long?

For a moment, Tasyo thought of cutting himself loose with his little knife but the uncertainty in the deep blue sea is far more fearful than holding on to the devil.  The deep blue sea offers no relief but empty promises of survival.  The deep blue sea is devoid of traces of hope with nothing that you can cling to and sigh.
Tasyo has caught between the giant Manta Ray and the wilderness of Mindanao Sea.  Between the devil… and the deep blue sea!

Who among you here still clings to your personal devil?   Is there anyone here who was brave enough to let go and face the emptiness of the deep blue sea?

I for one, my fellow Toastmasters, had been fighting many devils in my life – my desire, my failed dreams, my raging ambitions, my mother, and yes, my very own self!  I cling to this devils because I know that even if they hurt me, and even if they brings me pain… it also gives me respite… enough for me to breath and survive.

Don’t dare me to let go, for I have done it too.  There are few devils that I let go: Singapore, vices, women, and greed.  I did it because in that deep blue sea, I saw someone who was willing to hold my hand.  That someone was my beloved wife.  But for my other deep blue see… I doubt if I am willing to let go.

Fellow Toastmasters, ladies and gentlemen, beloved guest… good evening!

Set the mood of the story
“Once upon a time, a beautiful princess lives in a palace”.   Sounds familiar, isn’t?  I bet, it reminds you of those story-telling sessions with your mom, grandmothers or perhaps with your teacher.   Regardless of who told you the story, one thing is certain.  It evokes a great sense of adventure, excitement and fun onto you.

Good evening fellow Toastmasters and guests.

Tonight, allow me bring you back to the fantasy world, and all I want you to do is sit back, relax, open your imagination, and enjoy.

      Are you ready kids?

      The Fisherman
Long, long time ago, there was an old fisherman who lives in a small town along the shores of the great Arabian Seas.   The fisherman was known for his wisdom and wit, and everything would have been perfect, except for his one strange behavior.  He cast his net only four times a day – no more, no less.

Often, he returns from the sea with a handful of fish, few mussels, and sea weeds. And then, he spends the rest of the day in his small hut waiting for sundown.  Nobody really can explain why the fisherman cast his net only four times in a day.  Some say he is in a hurry to go home so he can harness his thinking skills and wisdom, other jeers saying “he is just lazy”.   Whatever the reason was, only the fisherman knows.

      A Gloomy Day
Then one gloomy day, the seas were rough.  The fisherman, don’t want to go fishing but he has no food, so he set sail.

In the dark seas, the wind was howling and waves were tossing the boat.  The fisherman tossed his net.  He pulled it up – it was heavy - and found a dead donkey.   Angry, he started to curse the wind.
The second time, he throws his net into the dark waters and netted a pitcher full of dirt.  He was furious, and started to curse the seas.  The third time, he throws his net into the dark waters.   He waited for few minutes and when he pulled it up; he found shards of pottery and glass.   He started to cry!   The gods must have punished me!

“This is it, my last throw”, he murmured.  Slow and steady, he kissed his nets with a good luck kiss and then throws it wide into the dark waters.  He waited for several minutes and then when he pulled it up, he found an exotic bottle that had a seal of Solomon on it.

The fisherman was happy! He could sell the bottle and make some money.  But he became curious of the seal and he thought something precious might be inside.  He broke the seal with his knife and to his surprise and plume of smoke come out of the bottle and condenses into a huge green man.

      The Jinni
In a thunderous voice, the green man shouted “I am the Jinni of the bottle! Who dares to set me free?”

The fisherman was very frightened and tried to hide with the net.

But the Jinni saw him, pick him up, and held him into the air.   “So you are the one who set me free”.   “When I was imprisoned in the bottle, I promised”.  “In my first century, I will reward anyone who set me free with riches beyond imagination”.   “In my second century in the bottle, I bowed to reward anyone who set me free with good health, riches and the entire world to rule”.   “On my 3rd century, I promised to grant anyone who set me free with 3 wishes of his choices”.   “After 4 centuries and nobody has set me free, I bowed to kill anyone who set me free”!  “Waaahhhhaahahahaah”.

The fisherman was so frightened and he even peed in his pants.   Yet after few minutes, he was able to gather his strength and answered calmly.  “Oh great one!   You are indeed mighty and powerful.  It is my honor to die in your hands.   Please put down so I can prepare myself and make myself worthy”.
The Jinni was amused with the answer of the fisherman. So he put him back to his boat.
While cleaning up himself, the fisherman asked the Jinni.

“Oh mighty one, before I die indulge me to witness your power and magnificence”.  “Calm down the storm because I cannot clean up myself with a rocking boat.”

“Hahaha… oh human!  You of little faith!   Witness my glory and power”!    In one snap, the storm cleared up.

“Oh mighty one, you are so powerful and mighty.  Forgive me for my ignorance, but how would it be possible for you to fit in this small bottle?  You are so huge!”

“You dare to question my power!”    A great lightning and thunder filled the air.

“Forgive me oh might one, I am just human and I could not comprehend your power”!

“You fool!  I’ll show you how I could fit in the bottle”.

The Jinni shrunk himself and transformed into a smoke-like entity and entered into the bottle.   The fisherman immediately jumped on the bottle and sealed it, trapping the Jinni back into the bottle.   It was already late when the Jinni realized that he was tricked by the fisherman.

The fisherman held the bottle and look at the Jinni inside.

“After setting you free, you wanted to kill me. Is that what you reward me for setting you free”?   he shouted.

The fisherman extended his arms and get ready to throw the bottle back into the sea, when he heard the Jinni cried and pleaded.  Curious, the fisherman stopped and look inside the bottle.   He found the remorseful Jinni explained that he was not bad and he was just angry for his ordeal.  To convince the fisherman, the Jinni started to tell the story as an example of the why he should be spared.

The fisherman put down the bottle and started listening to the story of the “Sultan and the Medicine Man”.

Opps…. That’s another story, isn’t?   Next time, children.  For now, let settle down and let our evening master proceed with the show.

      Back to you evening master!

Gee.. I am getting serious with this Basic Manual Take 2 thing.

I just delivered my project #2 of the Basic Manual this afternoon at Filcom-IT Toastmasters Club. The members gave me a thunderous applause after the speech, and my evaluator showered me with heaps of praises and accolade for the successful delivery. The eyes of new members were filled with enthusiasm and amazement, and I could say, I have inspired them.

But only if they knew, I was totally unprepared before the meeting. Minutes before I was called in front, I was asking TM Marlyn for a good topic for my speech. She told me to deliver a speech about my high school days, which I immediately outlined in my mind.

My speech was about my experience as a young boy who has trouble finding a date for the upcoming prom night. I related the ordeal, humiliation and pain that a teenager would feel when everyone rejected him. The highlight of the story is the conversation between the boy and father emphasizing on the size of heart rather than looks or riches. The twist of the speech - which serves as the conclusion - is my story of first dance, first kiss, and first love with the girl whom eventually I married in the future.

Hehehe... if only they knew of something else (that's my secret!)

My initial thought of repeating the Toastmasters Basic Manual was somewhere between ridiculous and laborious. If most Toastmasters takes at least 1 year to complete the basic manual - just like me, then why would I want to repeat the task? Well... frankly, I don't know!

Mon Austria started delivering speeches from the basic manual since June. At first I didn't get the gist of why he was doing that. Then lately I thought, this could be my chance to further refine my speaking skills and put color to what was a lackluster performance during my first time. So why not do it again!

Well, that is exactly what I did.

Pres Rod Ganzon, TM Janice, Me, TM Nerilyn, TM Rachel
I delivered my Project #1 The Ice Breaker at the inaugural meeting of the Filcom-IT Toastmasters Club this afternoon. My audience were mostly neophytes in Toastmasters and they all paid me a handsome round of applause. Just short of standing ovation, hehehe!

Honestly, I did not prepare for that speech. I just winged it. All I did was talked like what I do in Table Topics and then expanded two main points: poverty and triumph. I was confident that I could deliver a good performance because the objective was very simple - to start speaking.

Hmm... I think, I have to do better next speech.
